What have we read this year?
Star of Fear, Star of Hope. By Jo Hoestlandt.
Set in France, during the Nazi occupation of World War II, a gentile child named Helen recalls the mounting persecution of her Jewish friend. She wonders why her best friend, Lydia, has to wear a yellow star. Why are people in hiding and using strange names? What is Lydia afraid of?
Can we save the Tiger? By Martin Jenkins.
Tigers are pretty special — and so are ground iguanas and partula snails and even white-rumped vultures. But these and many other animals are in danger of disappearing altogether, joining the dodo, the marsupial wolf, the great auk, and countless other animals we will never see again. Using the experiences of a few endangered species as examples, Martin Jenkins highlights the ways human behaviour can either threaten or conserve the amazing animals that share our planet. Vicky White’s stunning portraits of rare creatures offer a glimpse of nature’s grace and beauty — and give us a powerful reason to preserve it.
The Selfish Giant. By Oscar Wilde.
This magnificent new edition of Oscar Wilde's beloved tale tells the story of the selfish giant who built a wall around his beautiful garden to keep children out. It was always winter in the garden, for no other season would venture there. Then one morning, a special child brought spring back, and the giant's heart melted along with the snow.
Love Reading 4 Kids
Click the picture link to access Love Reading 4 Kids. Here, you can see what books are new and what a recommended read is. This is where we get lots of ideas from. In Year 6, we enjoy every opportunity to read our own books in school, either independently or with a reading partner.
We enjoy guided reading in a variety of ways. Some of our sessions involve whole class guided reading, where we all focus on a particular extract or book. During these sessions, we are able to explore and discuss new vocabulary. We also use these sessions to develop our skills of inference and comprehension - orally discussing and sharing our responses and ideas as well as using a written response.
